Residency in Paraguay: Our Journey, Lessons Learned and How Weโ€™re Making It Easier for You ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡พ

When we made the decision to move to Paraguay, we did so with intention. We had visited before โ€” something we highly recommend to anyone considering a move abroad โ€” and returned ready to stay. With eight duffel bags, a baby in tow and our FBI background check rapidly approaching expiration, we jumped straight into the residency process.

We chose a well-known immigration lawyer – familiar from our initial visit – hoping that his reputation and English fluency would make things smoother. At the time, our Spanish was rudimentary, and we knew weโ€™d need guidance. Things started off promising โ€” but it didnโ€™t last.

What We Experienced

As the process unfolded, we found ourselves increasingly confused and unsupported:

  • We were often handed off to assistants who didnโ€™t speak English.
  • Instead of being driven by the lawyerโ€™s team, we were unexpectedly put into taxis with unclear instructions and no idea who (if anyone) would meet us at our destination.
  • We struggled to get clear answers, even when speaking with the lawyer directly.
  • We were asked to surrender custody of our official documents โ€” not out of necessity, but for their convenience.

With an infant in our arms and stress mounting, we ultimately did not complete the process with that firm. Instead, we finished it with a personal friend who happened to be a lawyer โ€” though not one who works in residency. It was not ideal, but it got us through.

The experience was eye-opening. For a prominent immigration lawyer, the lack of clarity, cultural sensitivity and personalized support โ€” especially at that price point โ€” was deeply disappointing.
